يشتمل الكتاب على ستة فصول بالإضافة إلى المقدمات والخاتمة والمراجع وملحق الخرائط والأشكال والجداول، حيث بحثت مقدمة المؤلف مشكلات البداوة الصرفة، ثم الخلفية التاريخية والبيئية لعرب وسط آسيا في الفصل الأول، فنظام الرعي البدوي في منطقة قطغن في الفصل الثاني، في حين جاء الفصل الثالث عن التنظيم الاجتماعي لعرب وسط آسيا: تراجع العشيرة، ليكون الفصل الرابع عن دور العرب في الاقتصاد المحلي، بعدها جاء الفصل الخامس عن تحويل النظام الرعوي إلى نظام تجاري وأثره في العرب، مختتما توماس بارفيلد فصول البحث بـ (عرب وسط آسيا والمؤسسات الوطنية)
