في الموسمين الجامعيين ١٩١٥، ١٩١٧ ألقى فرويد سلسلة من ثمانية وعشرين محاضرة أرادها أن تكون مدخلا إلى التحليل النفسي وعرضا شاملا لأطروحاته ولكشوفه كعلم نظري وتطبيقي معا. هذه المحاضرات علاوة على شمولها، تتسم ببساطتها وسهولتها : فقد ألقى قرويد أكثرها ارتجالا ابتغاء تعريف الجمهور الواسع بمبادئ التحليل النفسي وتقنيته. وقد وزع فرويد محاضراته هذه إلى ثلاثة أقسام : بادئا بعلم نفس الهفوات، ثم بعرض لنظرية الأحلام، قبل أن ينتهي إلى بيان مفصل للنظرية العامة للأمراض العصابية.
