تبدأ أحداث القصة بـ (في بقعة من بقاع الأرض، كانت هناك صحراء، وكانت هناك ثلاث قبائل تحيط الصحراء من جهات مختلفة. القبيلة الأولى تعيش على ضفاف نبع من الماء، والقبيلة الثانية تعيش داخل غابة من الأشجار الكثيفة، أما القبيلة الثالثة فكانت تعيش في كهوف وسط جبال، وكانت كل قبيلة تضع للقبيلة الأخرى اسما. \"النبعاويون\" هم الذين يعيشون عند النبع، \"الغاباتيون\" هم الذين يعيشون في الغابة، \"الكهفيون\" هم الذين يعيشون في الكهوف. الصحراء التي تفصل بين القبائل الثلاثة، يسكنها وحش غامض أطلقوا عليه اسم ذئب النهار، لأنه يعوي بصوت مخيف عند شروق الشمس وفي منتصف النهار وقبل المغيب، لذلك لا يستطيع أحد من أبناء كل قبيلة الوصول إلى الآخر)
