كان شفيق الحوت كزهر الصبار رقة، ومثل أشواك الصبر إيلاما ؛ سنديانة دهرية، أوراقها ناعمة وحروفها مسننة. كان رقراقا كمياه الينابيع، وغضوبا إذا اقتربت ويلات الزمان من فلسطين أو من شعبها أو من قضيتها. ستون عاما بعد رحيله عن يافا ولم ينس رقم صندوق بريده أو رقم جواز سفره الفلسطيني. وشفيق الحوت بنضاله الوطني الممتد منذ النكبة الفلسطينية حتى رحيله، هو خلاصة إنسان عربي قاوم أقداره بعناد، وواجه أيام حياته بنبل وشغف، فلمع اسمه كأحد أبرز المناضلين في الحركة الوطنية الفلسطينية المعاصرة، وكانت سيرته هي سيرة الألم، وسيرة القلب، وسيرة الشرايين المسدودة، وسيرة الشجاعة والعنفوان، وسيرة الحنين إلى يافا التي ولد فيها في عام 1932 وغادرها قسرا في عام 1948 بعدما خلف في ثراها شقيقه جمال الذي استشهد مدافعا عنها. وقد حاولت جهات سياسية وأمنية اغتياله غير مرة، وتعرض للموت في غمار الحرب الأهلية اللبن.
