اكتشاف مذهل رواية عن الحب والجنون بجمال رشيق وغرابة بالغة. هي رواية كاواباتا الأخيرة التي تركها غير مكتملة عند انتحاره في نيسان 1972. إينكو في مستشفى إيكوتا للأمراض العقلية حيث تركتها أمها وحبيبها كونو للعلاج من \"العمه\". قد تسمى الحالة \"نوبات من عمى الجسد\"، إذ تغدو عاجزة عن رؤية جسد حبيبها، رغم أن بصرها لم يتأثر إجمالا. تنهار إينكو وتدور نقاشات حامية بين كونو وأمها حول حالتها، وهل تشكل جنونا بالفعل أم لا.
