ألغاز في اللغة والأدب الألغاز هي جمع لغز، وأصله الحفرة الملتوية يحفرها اليربوع والضب والفأر ؛ لأن هذه الدواب تحفر جحرها مستقيما إلى أسفل ثم تحفر في جانب منه طريقا وفي الجانب الآخر طريقا، وكذلك في الجانب الثالث والرابع، فإذا طلب بعضها البدوي بعصاه من جانب نفق من الجانب الآخر. ثم استعملوه في الإتيان بالعبارة يدل ظاهرها على غير الموصوف بها ويدل باطنها عليه، وهي من قبيل الملاحن، وتشارك المعمى والأحاجي أيضًا من حيث التعمية في جميعها وإيرادها على ذلك الوجه المقصود، إلا أن بينها فروقا في الاعتبار والاصطلاح عند المتأخرين - كما تعرف ذلك فيما نسوقه منها وما نذكره من تاريخها.
