جاء صدور هذا الكتاب إبان الانتهاء من الحرب الأهلية الأمريكية، حيث شهد مناخ هذه الفترة تحولات فكرية وثقافية وعلمية ودينية خطيرة، خاصة أن أوروبا كانت قد بدأت إرهاصات ثورتها الصناعية مع ما واكبها من أحداث كبيرة، وظهور رواد لحركة التنوير والانطلاق نحو التغيير. ومنذ ظهور هذا الكتاب حتى اليوم لم يتوقف الجدل حوله، ومهما كان رأى القارئ فى الكتاب والكاتب، فإننا لا نستطيع أن نغفل أهمية ما ورد فيه من قضايا تتعلق بنا مباشرة، وتمس العقيدة والسلوك والمناخ الذى كانت تحياه المنطقة العربية فى ظل الحكم العثمانى. الكتاب يعد من أدب الرحلات، حيث تبدأ الرحلة من نيويورك لتجوك الشرق والبحر المتوسط، وتنتهى بفلسطين، فهو محاولات لإثارة قضايا تهم القارئ العربى المسلم والمسيحى.
