يرى بعض المفكرين المهتمين بقضايا العولمة أن صياغة تعريف دقيق للعولمة تبدو مسألة شاقة نظرا إلى تعدد تعريفاتها والتي تتأثر أساسا بانحيازات الباحثين الأيديولوجية، واتجاهاتهم إزاء العولمة رفضا وقبولا. حيث يرى السيد ياسين - مثلا- أنه يجب أن يوضع في الاعتبار ثلاث عمليات يمكن أن تكشف عن جوهر صياغة تعريف شامل للعولمة : الأولى انتشار المعلومات بحيث تصبح مشاعة لدى جميع الناس والثانية، تتعلق بتذويب الحدود بين الدول، والثالثة هي زيادة معدلات التشابه بين الجماعات والمجتمعات والمؤسسات، وهذه قد تكون نتائجها سلبية على بعض المجتمعات وإيجابية على مجتمعات أخرى كما يرى أن العولمة على صراع مع المحلية في مسألة توسيع الحدود أو تضييقها، كما أن هناك اختلاف واضح بين الدول وموقفها من العولمة، حيث أن دولا تقبل ببعض جوانب العولمة وقد ترفض جوانب أخرى.
