مثلت قناة السويس، أحد أهم المعابر المائية العالمية، رأس حربة لا يستقيم الأمر بدونها لدى دول الاستعمار عبر عقود من الزمان، وعلى الرغم من معارضة «إنجلترا» حفر القناة في بداية الأمر، فإنها ما لبثت حين سنحت لها الفرصة أن انقضت عليها وعلى «مصر» عقودا وعقودا محاولة تقليص دورها، والحيلولة دون استفادة منافسيها منها؛ بالحرب تارة، وبالمفاوضات والمراوغة تارة أخرى. فهل اتخذت «إنجلترا» القناة ذريعة لاحتلال مصر، أم وجدت نفسها مضطرة إلى خوض هذا الصراع للحفاظ على مستعمراتها بشرق «آسيا»؟ يأخذنا الكتاب في جولة لمعرفة كل ما دار في الكواليس بين عامي ١٨٥٤-١٩٥١م، وما دار عبر هذه العقود حول العلاقة بين إنجلترا وقناة السويس.
