تدور أحداث الرواية أن حول هناك نوع من الحجارة البيضاء الملساء التي يحرض جمالها المرءَ على إمتلاكها وكان لدى فيا حجر من ذلك النوع ولم تفكر في منحه لأحد إلا بعد أن التقت بهامبوس ابن الإسكافي الذي وعدها أن يرسم على ساعة برج الكنيسة عينين وأنفا وفما إن هي فقط أعطته الحجر وأن يقود أيضا فيلا بيديه العاريتين وهذا ما فعله لكن الصعوبات تتوالى من كل حدب وصوب صعوبات على هيئة مدبرة منزل ضخمة غاضبة ومحافظ يتظاهر بالنوم وأناس آخرين يصعب التعامل معهم وفي نهاية المطاف قد تقف الحياة بكاملها ضد المرء إلى حد يكاد يجعله يعزف عن المشاركة فيها لكن سحر الحجر الأبيض يتخطى العقبات.
