لم يكتشف فرويد مفهوم اللاوعي بالمعنى الدقيق للكلمة لكنه منح لمصطلح وجد سابقا معنى جديدا وسيعمل جاهدا على إضفاء الشرعية عليه، ارتكازا على أبحاثه الشخصية ولقد أدت فرضية اللاوعي الفرويدية من تأسيس «علم نفس الأعماق»، و«ما وراء علم النفس»، أي التحليل النفسي وتسمح فرضية من هذا القبيل بفهم بعض السيرورات المرضية اللاعقلانية المتكررة والمتعلقة بوجود الذات. وهذا الأمر يفسر أيضا اختراع فرويد لإستراتيجية علاجية نفسية، هي العلاج التحليلي النفسي، وهكذا بدأ إصلاح عميق سيؤدي إلى إنكار الكوجيطو الديكارتي، إصلاح يرتكز على أن «الأنا ليس هو السيد في بيته»
