يتناول الكتاب قضيتين أساسيتين أثارتا الكثير من النقاش، وكتبت حولهما الكثير من الدراسات والأبحاث واختلف حولهما المؤرخون، تتعلقان بتأسيس مدينة مراكش وتسميتها، وما يرتبط بذلك من أسئلة تتعلق بهوية المؤسسين ودوافع اختيار موقعها والبنايات الأولى التي تم تشييدها خلال مرحلة التأسيس، وطبيعة المجال الجغرافي والبشري المحيط بها خلال هذه المرحلة، وغيرها من الأسئلة والإشكالات التي تصدى للإجابة عنها المؤرخون المغاربة والأندلسيون والمشارقة والأوربيون قديما، كما تصدى لها أيضا الباحثون المحدثون من خلال عدد من الدراسات النظرية الأكاديمية، أو من خلال الأبحاث الأركيولوجية الميدانية التي بدأت بمحيط جامع الكتيبة منذ سنة 1923، وتوجت بإصدار كتاب في الموضوع سنة 1952.
