يصف المؤلف في هذه الرواية الحياة الريفية في المجتمع الصيني في بداية خمسينيات القرن العشرين حيث عاش فترتي الطفولة والصبا في محافظة ونشيان بمقاطعة خنان الصينية عاصر خلالها حركات سياسية مثل مكافحة اليمينية والقفزة الكبرى والكومونة الشعبية والتنظيفات الأربعة، وهي حركة وطنية هدفها \"التنظيف في مجالات السياسة والاقتصاد والتنظيم والأيديولوجيا\" خلال الفترة ما بين عامي 1963 و1966، وتسمى أيضا بحركة التثقيف الاشتراكي والثورة الثقافية الكبرى.
