يتمحور مضمون هذا الكتاب حول إشكالية التأويل الفلسفي الذي أخذ فيه الفهم بعدا فلسفيا أنطولوجيا والذي يكون مرتبطا ارتباطا وثيقا بما في المفسر ومستقبله، بمعنى أنه محكوم بزمانيته، لأن نقطة الانطلاق الجوهرية لعملية التأويل هي كون الهرمينوطيقا نشاطا كليا عاما ثم أن مهمة الهرمينوطيقا في نظر غادامير هي الوصول إلى لغة مشتركة بمعنى الوصول إلى اتفاق، ومن ثم إلى فهم، حتى يحصل الاتفاق بين الموجودات العاقلة إنه من الممكن أن يحقق قدرا من الموضوعية بفعل فاعلية ووظيفة الهرمينوطيقا طالما أنها تسعى إلى تحقيق نوع من الفهم أو الاتفاق لكن الموضوعية الناجمة عن وظيفة الهرمينوطيقا هي تلك التي لا تلغي تماما الدور الفعال للمفسر في عملية الفهم من خلال التساؤلات والتوقعات التي يطرحها.
