هذا الكتاب به صرح روسو بأنه لا يفترض وجود الحال الطبيعية فعلا وإنما يستحسن حالا من الهمجية متوسطة بين الحال الطبيعية والحال الاجتماعية يحافظ الناس بها على البساطة ومنافع الطبيعة ويظهر من تعليقات روسو على متن الكتاب أنه لا يريد رجوع المجتمع الفاسد الحاضر إلى حال الطبيعة وإنما يعد المجتمع أمرا لا مفر منه مع فساده وهو يعلل هذا الفساد بالتفاوت بين أفراد المجتمع في المعاملات والحقوق فيتغنى بالإنسان الطبيعي الطاهر ويقول بتلك الحال المتوسط حيث تسود المساواة.
