يبحث الكاتب السوري محمود محمد علقم في تاريخ نهر بردى وواديه منذ العصر الآرامي واليوناني والعصر الروماني والبيزنطي والإسلامي والعثماني وحتى المرحلة الراهنة. فالحياة في وادي بردى تعود إلى أبعد من نصف مليون من السنين، وقد ازدهرت دمشق منذ أواخر الألف الثاني قبل الميلاد في العصر الآرامي، وكان الوادي طريقا للقوافل بين المدينتين دمشق وبعلبك. تبلغ مساحة الوادي نحو 175 كم2. وكان ورد اسمه في العهد القديم «التوراة» سفر الملوك الثاني وتفسيره الذي قام به نعمان السرياني، وذلك في القرن التاسع عشر قبل الميلاد ... إلخ.
