إن الغاية التى يرمي إليها العقاد من تأليف هذا الكتاب هي إثبات أن بعثة محمد عليه السلام، وظهور الإسلام دعت إليهما حاجه العالم في زمان بروزهما إلى إنقاذه من تيه الضلال الذى كان يتخبط فيه وهدايته إلى نظام جديد يكفل له سعادة الدنيا وحسن ثواب الآخرة، وقد كان هذا شأن كل ديانة سماوية برزت في ناحية من نواحي الأرض إلا أن الإسلام كانت دعوته شاملة غير مقتصرة على البيئة التي نشأ فيها حتى يمكن القول بجزم وبغير تردد أنه أريد به أن يكون دين المستقبل للإنسانية جمعاء.
