أحمد بن فضلان بن العباس بن راشد بن حماد، كان يعيش في النصف الثاني من القرن الثالث والنصف الأول من القرن الرابع الهجري التاسع والعاشر الميلادي وهناك في اسمه بعض الاضطرابات: فعبر عنه ياقوت الحموي بأحمد وورد اسمه في النسخة الخطية للكتاب بصورتين أحمد ومحمد، حيث تعتبر رحلة إلى بلاد الترك من الرحلات الهامة بتكليف سلطاني حيث تم وصف هذه البلاد بعناية شديدة من عادات وتقاليد وكل شئ عن هذه البلاد في ذلك الوقت.
