وصف رواية الجمال الأسود تأليف (آنا سويل) لقد نٌشرت رواية الجمال الأسود في عام 1877، وشهدت تلك الفترة التى نشرت فيها ظهور عديد من الجمعيات المدافعة عن حقوق الحيوان بجانب حركات نسائية وأخرى تسعى للإصلاح الاجتماعي بالرغم من أن الرواية موجهة في الأساس للقراء الصغار إلا أنها أسهمت في لفت الأنظار الى كيفية معاملة الخيول، ويرى البعض أنها أسهمت بشكل واضح في الإقلاع عن ممارسات سيئة مثل استخدام الزمام الكابح الذي يؤذي الحصان بذلك استطاعت هذه الرواية أن تصبح سبيلا لسلوك إنسانى يتبعه كل من يقرأها.
