قسم هذا الكتاب إلى مقدمة وفصل تمهيدي ( مدخل الدراسة ) وخمسة فصول ، قسم كل فصل من هذه الفصول إلى عدة مباحث ، وخاتمة ، وقائمة بالمصادر والمراجع، وتم اختيار \" القتال الكلابي \" لعدة أسباب : أولاها : إنه شاعر قديم قبل أنه جاهلي، وقيل إنه إسلامي كان معاصرا لجرير والفرزدق والراعي النميري، ومن ثم فإن شعره ذو قمية لغوية لوقوعه في عصر الاحتجاج، وثانيها : إنه شاعر مغمور لم يحظ بدراسات كافية برغم ما يظهر من جودة شعره، ثالثها : إن ديوانه حديث الظهور فلم يطبع إلا عام 1989 م فلم يسبق دراسته لاسيما في الجوانب اللغوية، والمنهج الذي انتهجه الكتاب هو المنهج الوصفي الإحصائي التحليلي في موضوعات هذه الدراسة وهي الجملة الاسمية والجملة الفعلية والنواسخ في الجانب النحوي والمصادر والمشتقات في الجانب الصرفي.
