يروي الصلحي في كتاب سيرته الذاتية الذي أسماه قبضة من تراب والذي نشر عام 2012، أنه، وعقب عودته من دراسته بكلية لندن، أصابته صدمة أثرت كثيرا على مجرى حياته كرسام عندما فوجئ بعزوف الجمهور عن تذوق أعماله الفنية. توصل حينها إلى أن ذلك ناتج من أن الأعمال المعروضة لم تكن تعبر عن الموروث التشكيلي للسودانيين، ما دفعه إلى الانتباه إلى القيم التصويرية في البيئة الثقافية السودانية، وقاده ذلك إلى توظيف فنون الخط العربي والرموز الإسلامية والزخارف الأفريقية في لوحاته مع توظيف تقنيات الفن الأوروبي الحديث. ومن هنا بدأت مرحلة ما أطلق عليه منذ أوائل الستينيات اسم مدرسة الخرطوم التشكيلية التي أعتبر الصلحي أبرز مؤسسيها وروادها.
