يتناول هذا الكتاب التي لعبتها رحلات الاستكشافية التي نظمتها فرنسا إلى جنوب المغرب في القرن التاسع عشر تمهيدا لاحتلاله، حيث مكنتها من الوصول إلى مناطق قضية كانت تدخل في حكم الأراضي المجهولة بالنسبة لها وجعلتها تتعرف على النسق القبلي للسكان حتي يسهل الاختراق المؤذي للاحتلال، وقد كان احتلال كل من الجزائر والسنغال دافعا الحكومة الفرنسية آنداك للتفكير قي وسيلة لربط المستعمرتين والتحكم في محيطهما.
