يدور الكتاب حول قصة كولبنكيان : \"Mr Five Percent\" وهو (كالوست سركيس كولبنكيان) ولد بإسطنبول عام (1869) لأب أرمني يعمل بتجارة النفط، والذي أرسله بدوره ليدرس هندسة وصناعة النفط في مدينتي لندن وباكو، عام (1896) هاجر من إسطنبول مع عائلته للقاهرة، حيث تعرف على رجل أعمال أرمني يعمل بالنفط وهو (ألكساندر مانطاشف)، والذي عرفه بدوره على معارفه المهمين فيها، ومن القاهرة انتقل لبريطانيا لعقد صفقات في مجال النفط هناك، أصبح بعدها مواطنا بريطانيا عام (1902)، عام (1907) ساعد في ترتيب اندماج (شركة رويال داتش) و(شركة شل) فحصل على أسهم فيهما لقاء ذلك الاندماج.
