يقدم المؤلف جهدا لافتا للانتباه للقارئ العادي والمتابع، من خلال دراسته وانتخابه مختارات شعرية بالفصيحة والعامية للشاعر مبارك بن حمد العقيلي (1875-1955). في هذه المنتخبات، والحديث هنا عن الشعر المكتوب بالفصيح منها، ينتخب إبراهيم الهاشمي قصائد تعود إلى مطالع القرن الماضي، في عقديه الأول والثاني، وتكشف هذه القصائد عن رومانسية مبكرة لدى الشاعر مبارك بن حمد العقيلي تنتمي إلى الأفق الواسع للشعرية العربية، والتي لم تتأسس في \"مدرسة\" أو \"تيار شعري\" غير إحيائي إلا لاحقا في ثلاثينات القرن الماضي، فانتمى إليها شعراء من طراز المصريين إبراهيم ناجي وعلي محمود طه والتونسي أبوالقاسم الشابي، وسواهم.
