عرفت الفضة في حضارة المايا القديمة على أنها «دموع القمر»، بينما ساد إعتقاد بأن عظام (الآلهة) المصرية كانت من الفضة وجلودهم من الذهب، لقد فتن هذا المعدن الثمين الناس بجماله منذ آلاف السنين، وروي كثير من القصص والأساطير عن الفضة وعن المنزلة الاجتماعية لصاغتها في تراث الشعوب، بدءا من «الفايكنغ»، قراصنة اسكندنافيا، إلى بدو أفريقيا الشمالية، استخدمت الفضة عبر القرون لتخزين الثروة وصرف النقود، وإظهار المنزلة الاجتماعية، وفي الطقوس والزينة، كما تم ربطها بالسحر وجلب الحظ، وذلك لأنها تتميز بخواص تجعلها مناسبة لأغراض متعددة، حيث يمكن صهرها وتشكيلها بسهولة، ويمكن تلميعها إلى الحد الذي تصبح فيه كالمرآة.
