اعتمدت معلومات هذه الدراسة على ما ورد في تاريخ الطبري بالدرجة الأولى، وتميزت بتنظيم مادتها، وتقدير بعض معلوماتها، من تكوين صورة متكاملة للحركة، فبدأت بدراسة مستوعبة للأحوال الجغرافية للأرض التي كانت مسرح الحوادث، فوصفت طبيعة تربتها، ومياهها، وأنهارها، ومراكز العمران فيها، وتلا ذلك دراسة عن نشأة \"صاحب الزنج\" واهتماماته، واتصالاته السابقة، ثم محاولاته في إقامة كيان مرتبط به يرأسه ويوجهه، والعناصر البشرية التي اتصل بها وحاول ضمها إليه، ومد سلطانه، والتنظيمات التي وضعها وموقف أهل المنطقة من ذلك، \"وجهد\" السلطان في الحد من توسع الحركة، ثم القضاء عليها، والأساليب التي أتبعها لتحقيق ذلك.
