الكتاب يوضح الجوانب النفسية والبواعث لشخصية معاوية بن أبى سفيان وهذا ﻳﻈﻬﺮ ﺟﻠﻴﺎ فى فصوله (بين القدرة والعظمة)، (الدهاء)، (الحلم)، ثم ﺗﻄﺮﻕ إلى الجانب الوراثى والمشهور عن القبيلة والعرق الأموي فى فصله (خليقة أموية)، ثم كان فصله الذى يعتبر ملخصا صغير لـ (عبقرية عثمان) (موقف معاوية من قضية عثمان)، وأعظم ما ذكر فى هذا الفصل نهايته التى أوجزت حيث قال : (وقضاء التاريخ فى موقف معاوية من عثمان أنه موقف يسقط كثيرا من التهم التى كان يكيلها لخصومه، ويسقط كثيرا من الأعذار التى كان ينتحلها لنفسه، ويوجب على المؤرخ أن ينفذ من وراء التهم والمعاذير إلى تفسير واحد لوقائع الثورة التي ثارها معاوية باسم عثمان، فإن أصدق البواعث لها أنها ثورة فى طلب الملك أعوزتها الحجة فالتمسها من مقتل الخليفة الشهيد)
