لما فصل عبد الله العروي نفسه عن شعيب كاتب \"الأوراق\"، عن جامع الأو راق، عن الرواي، وعن ادريس بطل القصة ؟ هل يفصل الكاتب نفسه عن الرأو ي ليزيل عن كاهله عبء الأفكار المطروحة وتبعاتها وأحكام القراء حول سيرته وأخطائه ؟ يبدوأن تعدد مصادر الرواية يعطي للكاتب حرية أكبر للتعبير دون التفكير في انتقادات النقاد وآراء القراء. فهوبتعدد الشخوص المسؤولة عن الرواية بين كاتب افتراضي وحاكي وبطل للقصة يحرر نفسه من روابط الدين والمجتمع ويخلق شخصيات بعقليات مختلفة ينسب إليها الأفكار والأحداث. كما يعطي، حسب عبد الله العروي، مساحة ضيقة للنقاد ليجعل من تحليلهم للرواية رؤية مبسطة تخول لهم \"ببساطة\" متعة القراءة.
