الكتاب الذي بين يدينا يقدم أول دراسة تاريخية مفصلة للخطوط الحديدية عامة في البلاد السورية وفلسطين، والخط الحديدي الحجازي خاصة، مع التركيز والتشديد على الخط الفرعي \"درعا-حيفا\"، والدور الذي لعبه في النهوض بالاقتصاد والعمران والإدارة والسياحة في فلسطين. هذه الدراسة محاولة أساسية وفريدة من نوعها لفهم أهمية الخطوط الحديدية والدور الذي لعبته في ربط الشرق بالغرب، ومساهمتها في إحداث تغييرات جوهرية في مجمل صور الحياة في البلدان التي مرت بها الخطوط. إن الخط الحديدي الحجازي كان بمثابة محاولة مساعدة وإنقاذ للدولة العثمانية في أواخر عهدها، وانعكست أهمية هذا الخط في ميادين كثيرة. ولا شك في أن دراسات أخرى تفصيلية ستظهر بعد هذه الدراسة لتسلط مزيدا من الأضواء على هذا الموضوع الهام.
