يعد هذا الكتاب واحدا من المؤلفات المهمة في التاريخ والأنساب، وروى الكلبي في كتابه كثيرا من الأخبار عن افتراق القبائل التي كانت متناثرة في كتب عدة، كل منها يعنى بمجموعة قبائل من أصل واحد، مخصصا هذا الكتاب لأخبار ولد نزار بن معد وهم أربعة : مضر، ربيعة، إياد، أنمار، وكانت منازهم مكة، وأرض العرب يمئذ خاوية، ليس بنجدها وتهامتها وحجازها وعروضها كبير أحد. كما تحكي مقدمة الكتاب أن هشام كان صاحب ذاكرة ساعدته على حفظ التاريخ والأنساب، وعالم بأنساب العرب وأخبارها ومثالبها، غزير التأليف في هذه الموضوعات، وكان أبوه أستاذه الأول، أخذ عنه نسب قريش، وأخذ بعد ذلك في تلقي العلم من العلماء.
