يروي «المرزباني» بالإسناد أخبار وأشعار عدد من النساء اللاتي عاصرن صدر الإسلام والعصر الأموي، وقد أسهب في سرد ما ورده عن بعضهن كما في أخبار الشاعرة الشهيرة «ليلى الأخيلية»، فيما يمكن أن نعده بمنزلة تراجم فريدة لهؤلاء الشاعرات، وتأتي الأبيات في سياق يضعنا في أجواء الشعر، وملابسات جريانه على لسان قائلته، ويتطرق إلى طريقة تعاطي متلقيه معه، فتارة تساجل الشاعرة شاعرا، وتارة تهجو ابنا أو ترثي زوجا، وتمدح خليفة في خبر آخر ... وهكذا، جدير بالذكر أن هذا الكتاب يعد ثالث ما ألف في أشعار نساء العرب، وذلك بعد «أشعار الجواري» للمفجع البصري، و«الإماء الشواعر» لأبي الفرج الأصفهاني، الأمر الذي يشير إلى ما وصلت إليه النساء من مكانة مرموقة في مجال إبداعي قد يخيل إلى البعض أنه حكر على فطاحل الشعراء من الرجال.
