خطط بغداد في معجم البلدان لياقوت الحموي يقع في حوالي 196 صفحة ؛ تناول ياقوت محال بغداد وشوارعها وأنهارها وأهم معالمها وحسب مسمياتها في بطون معجمه مرتبة حسب الحروف البهئاية، وبلغ عدد الأماكن التي أوردها وترجم لها ما يقارب المئتين. واختلفت موضوعاته عن أنحاء بغداد وتباينت ما بين الإفاضة والإنجاز. وربما عكس ذلك طبيعة مصادره أو طبيعة إقامته في بغداد نفسها. فجاء حديثه عن الجانب الغربي أوفر مما كان عن الجانب الشرقي، وفي الإطار العام للكتاب، وبفضل اقامته سنوات طويلة في بغداد، فقد أفسح مجالا واسعا لهذه المدينة في كتابه هذا. فتحت عنوان بغداد كتب صفحات مطولة عن المدينة تناول فيها مناقشة معاني اسمها وآراء اللغويين في ذلك.
