يعد هذا الكتاب من أقدم ما وصلنا من كتب مصنفات طبقات الشعراء، والذي صنف فيه ابن سلام الجمحي الشعراء إلى طبقات، وقد ناقش فيه عدة قضايا أبرزها قضية انتحال الشعر وتصنيف الشعراء، وقد قيل أن كلمة \"فحول\" دخيلة على اسم الكتاب وأن اسمه \"طبقات الشعراء\" فقط، ويغلب على الكتاب الطابع النقدي، ويظهر هذا جليا بدءا من أولى صفحاته، وقد ناقش ابن سلام في طبقات فحول الشعراء مسألة الشعر الموضوع من منظور عقلي، ولم يتردد في انتقاد مشاهير الرواة، كما حدد القواعد التي اتبعها لتصنيف الشعراء ولتفضيلاته الشعرية.
