يقسم الكتاب على فصلين يتناول الأول (حياته وثقافته) ضمن ثلاثة أقسام، هي مولده ونشأته، ثقافته، وقد جاءت ضمن ثلاثة محاور (مصادرها، أسلوبه، آثاره) في حين أفرد القسم الثالث من هذا الفصل لدراسة شعره، والتعريف به وبشاعريته، أما الفصل الثاني (منهجه ومنزلته العلمية) فقد اشتمل هو الآخر على ثلاثة أقسام هي منهجه ومنزلته العلمية في \"اللغة العربية ودراسة مشكلاتها وفي النحو والصرف، وفي التاريخ، وتحقيق النصوص\".
