يتناول الكتاب دراسة أنتربولوجیة عن الذبیحة، وأساسا الذبیحة الإسلامیة لعید الأضحى، وعن المسخرة، أي الاحتفالیات والألعاب والطقوس التي تجري عادة في الأيام التي تتلو العید، إنه نسق طقوسي شديد في مناطق التعقید وموغل في القدم لا يزال ممارسا كثیرة من المغرب العربي، وفیه تتجلى الصلة الوثیقة بین الوسط الطبیعي والإنسان المغربي ( والعربي) ومختلف أشكال التصورات والطقوس والاحتفالیات التي تمیز حیاته، ويقوم الكتاب على وصف أنثربولوجي دقیق قائم على المعاينة المباشرة لطقوس الذبیحة والمسخرة في بعض قرى جبال الأطلس الكبیر بالمغرب، ونقد لأوصاف الباحثین الأنثربولوجیین والإثنولوجیین السابقین، خاصة الغربیین منھم في عھد الاستعمار.
