يتناول الكتاب دراسات في التعميم الخرائطي حيث لم يقتصر دور الخرائطي على تصميم وتمثيل ورسم الخرائط فحسب بل ليشمل طرق الاستفادة من هذه التقنيات في استخلاص المعلومات الجغرافية والتي في منهجيتها تمثل مجالا تطبيقيا جيدا يسمى بالخرائط الآلية (Computer Cartography) فأصبحت مهمة الخرائطي تصميم وتمثيل الموضوعات الجغرافية بإحدى طرق التمثيل على الخرائط وبما أن الظواهر الجغرافية تحمل عند تمثيلها على الخرائط خاصية الارتباط المكاني مع الظواهر الأخرى المشتركة معها بالمكان فأن وضوح تمثيل مكوناتها يعد ضرورة جغرافية بعد أن يتم اختيار الأسلوب الأمثل لتمثيل هذه الظواهر على الخريطة.
