بدأت تظهر على العاملين في صناعة تلك الأنابيب وفي مستخدميها آثار ضارة للأشعة السينية مثل احمرار الجلد والحروق الإشعاعية. وفي عام 1902م ظهرت أورام سرطانية في أيدي صانعي وعارضي أنابيب الأشعة السينية نتيجة لتعرضهم للأشعة. وفي ذلك الوقت لم يكن ممكنا وضع حدود للتعرض الإشعاعي لأجل الحماية منه نظراً لعدم الإلمام الكافي بأضرار الأشعة وعدم وجود أجهزة لقياس مقدار التعرض الحاصل لتحديد الجرع الإشعاعية التي تسبب مثل هذه التأثيرات الحادة.
