يتناول الكتاب حيث أنه لا يخفى أن الثقافات والحضارات تتمايز وتختلف في درجة ربط قيمة الإنسان ببنية الجسد وبطبيعة الشخص المـادية، وحين تنحو حضارة نحو تـمجيد قوة الجسد وتكامل أعضائه وتناسق أجزائه، وحين تعلي من شأن ذلك وتجعله أساس الامتياز الاجتمـاعي، فإن من الآثار المباشرة لذلك أن تنظر هذه الثقافة إلى المعوقين والعاجزين جسديا نظرة دونية تحاصرهم في نطاقها وتفرض عليهم واقع التهميش والإقصاء الاجتمـاعي. وقد احتفت حضارة اليونان بالجسد في كمـاله وعنفوانه، واستبعدت من دائرة عنايتها الأجسام الضعيفة والمتهدمة، وكان أفلاطون معبرا عن هذه الرؤية فتحدث في جمهوريته عن مجتمع يخلو من المعتوهين والمشوهين.
