إن المتتبع لتاريخ الفكر البشري عموما والفكر الفلسفي خصوصا يرى أن الفلاسفة غالبا ما انكبت دراساتهم على البحث في النفس البشرية وانفعالاتها أكثر مما فضلوا البحث في موضوعات تخص الجسد ولهذا وقع الجسد ضمن تراتبية صارمة أفضت في أغلب أشكالها ليس في صالحه، فوقفت تارة إلى جانب العقل وتارة آخرى إلى جانب النفس أو الروح أي تاريخ التفكير في الجسد كان مبنيا على الدوام على مبدأ التعالي أحيانا وأحيانا آخرى على المفارقة، وهذا ما يسوغ قول نيتشه إن تاريخ الفكر هو تاريخ إذلال للجسد وإماتة الرغبات والتضحية بالذات.
