يكتشف القارئ لابن خلدون كمؤرخ أنه ابن خلدون لا يقف في صنعته عند حدود التأريخ ولكن يتعدى مهنة المؤرخ ليضحي اسمه جامعا تختفي شخصيات عدة. يمثل ابن خلدون راويا مثل غيره من الرواة عندما يتكلم على أصول العرب والبربر والترك ومشاهدا صحفيا عندما يتكلم على نفسه وعلى سلاطين بني مرين ومؤرخا يزاحم في الإتقان والنباهة والاطلاع المسعودي أو البيروني ومنظرا لقواعد الكتابة التاريخية مبدعا لعلم العمران في مستوى فلاسفة عهد التنوير كاشفا عن الحقيقة التاريخية كميزة بشرية ... إلخ. في كل مرة يوضع في سياق خاص بجانب المسعودي أو فولتير أو هيوم أو بودان.
