شمائل رسول الله \"صلى الله عليه وسلم\" فن صنف الناس فيه قديما وحديثا كتبا كثيرة ؛ فقد كان أحد أغراض كتب الحديث التي تهتم في المقام الأول بأحوال الرسول \"صلى الله عليه وسلم\" العملية ؛ في العبادة والمعاملة، باعتباره الأسوة الحسنة التي نقتدي بها، ولذا نراهم أفردوا الحديث عن شمائله بكتب مستقلة، ومنهم ابن كثير الذي كان تعويله على كتاب شمائل الترمذي، ثم أضاف إليه ما ورد في كتب الصحاح والمسانيد مما لا يستغني عنه المحدث والفقيه. وما أورده ابن كثير في هذا الكتاب يعد أوفى ما يمكن جمعه في هذا الغرض؛ فهو لم يترك جانبا مما ورد في كتب الحديث عن شمائل الرسول \"صلى الله عليه وسلم\" إلا ذكره، ورتب ذلك، فجمع بين بذل الوسع ودقة الترتيب وحسنه.
