يركز الكتاب على المفاهيم البيئية المعاصرة والحرص على تفهم مشاكل التلوث البيئي للحد منها والسيطرة عليها وكذلك ترسيخ التوازن بين انشطة التنمية والمصادر البيئية الطبيعية، ويشتمل الكتاب على ستة فصول، تضمن الفصل الاول المفاهيم الأساسية للبيئة والفصل الثاني على التغيرات في النظم البيئية أما الفصل الثالث فناقش الدورات البيوجيوكيميائية ويضمن الفصل الرابع نوعية البيئة وإدارتها من حيث مفهوم البيئة، إدارة النفايات الصلبة، إدارة المياه، مشاكل التلوث بالهواء والضجيج والإشعاع. كما عالج الفصل الخامس الأخطار البيئية وتقييم الآثار البيئية وتضمن الفصل السادس السكان والتنمية والبيئة.
