في الرواية يتمثل أمام البطل فجأة شخص يشبهه تماما، كأنه توأمه المتماثل، لكن دون أن يكون متأكدا من أن \"هذا\" الذي خرج من العدم هو شخص حقيقي فعلا أم مجرد هلوسة من نسج الخيال، ناتجة عن اضطرابات نفسية معقدة راكمها طوال المدة الماضية، وتحدث حوارات وصراعات حادة بين الأنا الهشة والضعيفة والمهزومة وبين الأنا/الآخر القوي والعنيف والواثق من النفس وتقود إلى شجار دموي عنيف لا ينتهي إلا بمصرع البطل / الأنا عند الحافة السحيقة، لكنه \"يعود\" إلى العالم الواقعي من جديد، من خلال الأنا / الآخر، الذي تقمص شخصية البطل تماما، في ولادة جديدة أقوى.
