يعد موضوع الديارات النصرانية في العراق والنشاطات العلمية والفكرية التي اضطلعت بها حتى أواخر العصر العباسي موضوعا مهما من موضوعات تاريخ الحضارة العربية الإسلامية، وقد استغرق قرونا عديدة، ابتدأت من الخطوة الأولى لنشأة الأديرة النصرانية المبكرة في عصور ما قبل الإسلام، واستمر حتى نهاية العصر العباسي، أما اقتصار الموضوع على الديارات النصرانية في العراق ؛ فلا بد من القول إن الديارات سبق وأن ظهرت عند الأمم القديمة بدءا من السومريين، ولو بأشكال ومسميات وأهداف مختلفة، واشتهر البوذيون بالديارات أيضا، لذلك قصرنا هذه الدراسة على الديارات النصرانية، وفي إقليم العراق الجغرافي، وحسب مفهومه المعروف حتى أواخر العصر العباسي.
