جاء هذا الكتاب على شكل مجموعة رسائل كتبها مانديلا في السجن وملاحظات دونها على مر الأيام ومقتطفات من أحاديث. ويتطرق مانديلا لحب زوجته الثانية ويني والعقود التي قضاها وراء القضبان وحتى وصوله لسدة الرئاسة عام 1994. ويتيح للقراء إمكانية التعرف إلى الوجه الآخر لمانديلا : من رسائله التي كتبها في أحلك ساعات الاحتجاز خلف القضبان الذي تعرض له على مدى 27 سنة، هنا يعرض ملاحظات دونها، بل خربشات كتبها خلال الاجتماعات، أو يسجل أحلاما مزعجة على رزنامة مكتبه في زنزانته داخل سجن جزيرة روبن، أو يدون يوميات على عجل خلال مسيرة نضالاته المناهضة للتمييز العنصري في بداية الستينيات.
