يظل ابن رشد أستاذ أوربا في عالم الفلسفة عدة قرون، وتكون \"الرشدية\" نتيجة لذلك الإقبال، فينحرف أولئك القوم، تحت هذا الاسم، عن آراء ابن رشد تارة، ويدنون منها تارة أخرى، وهذا ما أفاض رينان في تحقيقه بحثا وتمحيصا رادا الأمور إلى أسبابها، وقد عول رينان في وضع كتابه على مؤلفات ابن رشد التي ترجمت إلى اللاتينية والعبرية وإلى ما بقي من أصلها العربي وهو قليل جدا، كما حقق في جميع ما كتب عن ابن رشد وفلسفته في جميع لغات العالم فرجع الفروع إلى أصلها ببراعة تناسب شهرته، فأظهر كتابه الذي نعرض ترجمته، والكتاب ظهر للمرة الأولى سنة 1852، ففتح به أفق جديد في حقل الدراسات الفلسفية الإسلامية، وصار معول جميع الباحثين من جميع الأمم في الفلسفة العربية، ولا سيما فلسفة ابن رشد، فلا تكاد تجد مستشرقا أو عربيا يبحث في فلسفة ابن رشد من غير أن يقتبس معارف كثيرة من كتاب رينان هذا عادا إياه أهم المصادر في موضوعه.
