في هذا الكتاب يكتب المناضل الفلسطيني الأسير \"وليد نمردقة\" المولود عام 1961 دراسة هامة عنوانها ب \"صهر الوعي : أو في إعادة تعريف التعذيب\" قدم لهذه الدراسة د. \"عزمي بشارة\" بمقال عنوانه ب \"السجن كصورة مصغرة عن الوطن\"، حيث التقى الأسير قبل أربعة عشر عاما في غرف الزيارة في العديد من السجون الإسرائيلية، وباتت ظروف هذه الدراسة التي كتبها مناضل وهو في الأسر، وعلاقة د. بشارة به جزءا من موضوع البحث. يقول الدكتور عزمي بشارة : \"وللكتابة عن السجون حساسية لا يدركها إلا من عاشها فالأسرى منشغلون بأدق التفاصيل، تستحوذ عليهم أمور تبدو من خارج السجن قليلة الأهمية، ولكنها تبدو مصيرية للأسير ...\".
