حاولت الدراسة ابتداء رصد حجم تأثير الإثنية على النظم الحزبية الإفريقية بصورة كمية تتيح الفرصة للمقارنة بين دول القارة المختلفة وفق هذا المعيار، كما تسعى كذلك للكشف عن أنماط انتشار هذه الظاهرة عبر التقسيمات الثقافية والجغرافية للقارة الأفريقية، لتبدأ بعد ذلك محاولات تفسير التباين في مستويات تأثير الإثنية على النظم الحزبية الإفريقية من خلال عدد من المتغيرات المرتبطة بخصائص هذه النظم. ومن ثم تسعى الدراسة للإجابة على تساؤل رئيسي مؤداه ما هو حجم تأثير الإثنية على النظم الحزبية الإفريقية، وما هو نمط انتشار هذا التأثير في أقاليم القارة المختلفة ؟ وكيف تعمل خصائص النظم الحزبية الإفريقية كمحددات لتأثير الإثنية على هذه النظم ؟.
