من أجل تحديد سبب الحريق وأصله، ينبغي الإلمام والدراية بعدة مجالات، مثل كيمياء النار وسلوكها، وتركيبات الأبنية والمواد الداخلة فيها، والحرائق العائدة لأسباب عرضية أو متعمدة، والإلمام بمفردات وأساسيات لغة النار (مصطلحات الحريق)، كذلك الخبرة التراكمية في التحقيق في أسباب الحرائق، من الخبرة الذاتية أو الاستفادة من خبرات المحققين الآخرين، سواء بشكل مباشر أو من خلال مؤلفاتهم ومذكراتهم. ينبغي التعامل مع موقع الحريق بطريقة منتظمة، وخطوات مرتبة، وقبل الإقرار بل منشأ الحريق هو حرق عمد جنائي، ينبغي استبعاد الأسباب الأخرى العرضية المحتملة لمثل هذا الحريق، (وهو لا شك عمل مرهق للمحقق)، حتى لو وجودت أدلة تفيد بغير الأسباب العرضية.
