ينقسم هذا الكتاب إلي ثلاثة أقسام ويتناول القسم الأول عن وعي العرب قديما بالعناصر النظرية المشكلة لعتبات النص ويبحث في المصادر الأدبية والنقدية عن درجة هذا الوعي ومستواه ويتابع الشبكة الاصطلاحية التي وظفها العرب القدامى في معرض مقاربتهم لما يصطلح عليه في اللغات الواصفة بعتبات النص، ويهتم القسم الثاني بأهم التصورات الحديثة التي اعتنت بتحديد مكونات عتبات النص وعناصرها في الثقافة الغربية كما يعتني بإبرار التحولات البنيوية والأسلوبية التي مست العتبات وتحديد أهم وظائفها الجمالية والدلالية أما القسم الثالث فقد حاول ممارسة التصورات النظرية والمنهجية الواردة في القسمين السابقين.
